Frequently Asked Questions

If I’m in an auto accident with a borrowed car, whose policy pays?

If you lend your car to a friend and your friend is in an accident, it might be your insurance that is on the hook. Typically, the insurance follows the vehicle; however this may vary between insurance companies.

Should I purchase insurance through my rental car agency?

Your insurance transfers to a rental car, so if you have collision and comprehensive on your car it will follow you to the rental car, including the deductible you would have to pay. Another thing to keep in mind is that some rental car agencies may charge you an additional fee if you are in an accident with their rental car which prohibits them from renting that vehicle again in the near future, thus creating a “loss of income” for them. Depending on the cost, purchasing their insurance for the duration of the rental car may not be such a bad idea.

If my cell phone is stolen from my car, does my auto insurance cover it?

If your cell phone or any other personal items are stolen out of your vehicle, it would be covered under your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance, not your auto insurance. The only time it would be covered under your auto insurance is if the phone was permanently installed in the vehicle. Although the phone and personal items may be covered under your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance, there is usually a deductible involved.

Why is my dwelling coverage so high when my market value is so low?

Homes are insured at their “replacement cost” value to rebuild. In many cases this replacement value is going to be higher than the current market value and includes debris removal as well. Tools such as a replacement cost estimator are used to determine the replacement cost of the home based on size, construction type, and year built.

Do I need a four-point inspection?

If you are purchasing a home that is more than 30 years old or you’re shopping for new insurance, you’ll most likely require a four-point inspection.

Do I need a wind-mitigation inspection?
